This is an response to Andrew's article "Giving Big Brother a helping hand"
It is not surprising that the Chinese government is currently monitoring the Internet. It is not just happening in China, it is currently happening in various parts of the world especially in the Middle East. Even here in Canada, I would not be surprised if the activities we do on the internet is safe.
In an article published by CBC News
How do you think the government catches perverts in the internet? Of course, they monitor our computer. A man from Calgary was arrested for child pornography. Tips were given by an undercover internet police from the German Federal Police. (http://www.efc.ca/pages/media/cbc.08jul99.html).
These undercover cops are roaming freely around our own computers with out persion. Much like how an Inner Party member in 1984 is undersurvaillance all the time.
The factor that allows common people to let the ones they govern invade their privacy is fear. Most of us would certainly exchange a few of our liberties to keep us safe from outcasts of our society.
But the root of all this is of course us. We make the environment of these predators. We also give them the liberty to do whatever they want because they are excessivley exposed to our necesities (media, internet, television. These predators are the children that had no guidance by a parental figure, and it led them to the excessive exposure to other extreme liberties, such as pornography.
As a grade 12 student living in suburban Mississauga, it is easy to let go of certain liberties, such as internet privacy, because we did not fight for these rights. But for other countries, they fought for it and losing the right to express their opinion on the internet is a road of struggle.
I am responding to Marc S' article
His article relates back to the novel 1984 with accuracy on censorship and the government trying to prevent a certain chain of thought from spreading, or even starting.
Marc's article focuses in on the U.S government and targets a few people in very high authority, attempting to cover up and block art or media. His article brought back a recent discussion few of us had in school, about the new movie the Da Vinci Code. The discussion was about whether what the chaplain said on the PA system during the morning reflection/prayers was correct or fair for her to say. This topic of Christians boycotting a movie that entails a controversy with the base of Christianity.
This took many of us aback since most of us enjoy movies as art, which goes back to the topic of censorship of art. If Christians did boycott the movie then most likely the author of the book would have won the battle in convincing people not of the faith that the novel is not fiction but fact.
The position Colin Powell is taking is an extremely hazy and unclear, the novel compels its readers to realize that what the U.S government is blocking out any if not all deviations from their main objective, which would be the war in Iraq.
